Ikea recalls safety gates after personal injuries reported

The company states that friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted Patrull Klamma and Patrull Smidig gates is not enough to securely hold the gate in its designed position, causing a fall hazard. The lower metal bar of the setup can also be a trip and fall hazard.

Ikea also said that there have been 18 incidents around the world. This number includes three accidents when children have been injured as a result of falling down stairs. No injuries have been reported in the U.S.

The Patrull Klamma and Patrull Smidig safety gates models have white color, made of steel and plastic, and have about 29 inches height, and adjustable width (from about 29 inches to 34 inches). The gate is equipped with a spring mechanism that fits between the two sides of the door frame, designed to hold the gate in the intended place.

Below you can find a list of article numbers involved in the recall. The article number can be found on a permanent label which is attached to the metal bar at the bottom of the safety gate.

Affected article numbers are as follows:

  • 302-265-21
  • 500-375-67
  • 501-919-50
  • 655-517-10
  • 700-989-65
  • 901-136-01

The Patrull Klamma and Patrull Smidig gates had been sold at Ikea stores worldwide from August 1995 through February 2015 for about $35 a piece.

In co-operation with Health Canada, Ikea Canada has initiated a recall of the pressure mounted safety gates. The mentioned safety gate models are not suitable to be used at the top of stairs. If the gate is mounted at the top of a staircase this poses a fall hazard and risk of injury.

As the company states, at Ikea well being of every customer or any other person who comes into contact with Ikea products is of the utmost importance. Ikea Canada asks that concerned customers return the affected products for a full refund.

Ikea advises consumers to stop using the safety gate involved in the recall and to return it to any of Ikea stores for a full refund. If consumers want to keep their safety gate for limited use in a doorway between rooms or at the bottom of a staircase, they may contact Ikea for free updated user instructions and new adhesive warning labels to put on the gate.

Customers should return their Patrull Klamma and Patrull Smidig safety gate products with date stamp 1510 (YYWW year-week) or prior, at the Returns & Exchange department at any Ikea store or to call Customer Service toll free at 1-800-661-9807 for a full refund. Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required for this recall.
